I write about a wide range of travel, boating and marine industry topics for all types of print and digital media, including some of the worlds’s best-known boating magazines. I also created the Marine Diesel Expert mobile app that helps boat owners fix engine problems without resorting to outside help.
In a decade and a half as a journalist I have written millions of words and have interviewed a wide variety of people, including government ministers, directors of billion-dollar public companies, Olympic medallists and solo round the world sailors.
My extensive boating experience, including time as a professional sailor and yachtmaster instructor, helps to give a deeper understanding of the latest developments and issues affecting all aspects of the boating world, from top-level racers and ocean cruisers to occasional holiday sailors and newcomers to the sport.
I was brought up on the Isle of Wight, where my family still lives, and divide my time between home in London, boats in Cowes and Greece, and regular travel elsewhere in the world.
Boating experience
Over 60,000 miles of cruising and racing on more than 200 different boats of all descriptions from dinghies to 80 footers. These range from 100-year-old gaffers to the latest carbon-fibre race boats, including TP52s, Open 60s and Extreme 40 multihulls.
In addition to sailing fully-crewed yachts, I’m no stranger to single-handed cruising and also have 6,000 miles of two-handed passage making experience in boats up to 50ft. As a writer I have tested a wide variety of cruising and racing yachts for magazines including Sailing Today and Yachts and Yachting.
Geographically, my experience extends from Norway to the Southern Ocean and Cape Horn, including warmer locations such as the Med and Caribbean, and includes encountering storms with wind speeds over 60 knots.
